Who Is Responsible To Check The Medical Alert Bracelet?

Whose responsibility is it to check if you have a medical alert bracelet when you have to go to the hospital? Read to find out.

So this is kind of complicated, but I’ll boil it down for the most part.

  • If you’re less than fully conscious and go by ambulance then they will check for anything.
  • If you’re less than fully conscious and are taken directly to the hospital then they might check for a medical ID bracelets or necklace as well as try to access your records.
  • If you’re conscious and able to talk to them then it should come up with whatever is on your bracelet, otherwise, you can always inform them about your medical alert bracelets.
  • If you’re awake and go straight to the hospital instead of going in an ambulance. If it’s one you’ve been to before and they have access to your medical records? It shouldn’t be an issue.

You should make sure of the following point:

  1. Wear a recognized “Medical Alert” bracelet or necklace.
  2. Wear your bracelet on your left wrist. This is the side closest to the EMS they can reach for it repeatedly as they take vital signs, start IV access, etc.
  3. Carry a paper copy of your specific medical needs, medication schedule, allergies, Physician’s name, Healthcare Proxy’s name, etc in your wallet. Put it in a small plastic sleeve with your driver’s license.
